On any given Tuesday evening every Summer, you’ll find a horde of mountain bikers coming out to the picturesque Santiago Canyon, families in tow, for a mid-week Summer’s eve of redlined heartrates, fast-rolling tires, and dirty faces. We welcome you to the Over The Hump race series in sunny Southern California.
The first thing one notices in rolling up to the venue is smiling faces. It’s a fact we all know that riding bikes makes you smile. However every volunteer, staff member, bike shop owner, course marshal, and beer vendor seems to have an ear-to-ear grin on their faces. And the cool part: they’re all genuine! Oak Canyon’s vast grassy area provides the perfect venue for not only racers of all skill levels to come out and race their buddies, but the perfect setting to bring the entire family for an evening of fun and shenanigans. Kids can race, run around, and practice their bike handling skills. And on the series’ Family Nights, can jump in a variety of bounce houses, climb up climbing walls, get their faces painted, and just have fun!
Smanie has been out there every week demo-ing our saddle line, giving racers the chance to fit and test out their saddle of choice and see how they feel under a competitive race environment.
“It’s a crucial part of demo-ing saddles,” says Brand Manager Kimmi Runner, “The way we all would ride a bike around a parking lot, or on a short leisurely ride is far different from the stress we put our bodies under when we’re out there racing. Over the Hump provides us with a perfect platform to really allow riders to get the best of all worlds.”
THE COMPETITIVE SIDE
OTH sees a stacked field of seasoned Pros who battle week in and week out on the course. Smanie-sponsored Pro, Alfred Pacheco has had a stellar season and is currently winning the series with a near perfect record of First Place finishes each race. One of the best parts of this series from a racing standpoint, is the fact that newer riders and juniors have a chance to ride with, and on the same terrain as the competitive pros they admire and look up to. OTH even dedicates one of the races to the Beginners by pairing up female and male Elite racers with a Beginner, and allowing them to ride together. The Elites encourage, offer racing and riding tips, and support the Beginners as they race, which truly is the heart and soul of what we think this sport is about.
With only 2 Tuesday night races left in the 12 race series, things are heating up in every class as racers push hard to solidify their Series Overall placement. Be sure to stop by the Smanie tent for free saddle demos and fit consultations, and enter to win a free saddle of your choice, with winner announced at the Finale.
Maybe it’s the heart-pounding, hour of power, competitive racing that makes Over the Hump such an annual favorite. Maybe it’s the vendors, the delicious Wahoo’s tacos, beer, and post-race turn-by-turn banter with your friends. Perhaps it’s being able to race alongside your family and cheer on your strider-bike-racing little shredder, or perhaps it’s the childlike reminder of the feelings associated with Summertime that draw us in. Whatever the attractions are, we love them. And we look forward to seeing the dirt-covered faces and huge smiles every week.
